Do Your Birds is a daily bird-learning game made by DSCVR Labs.
The short version: we collect the minimum needed to run the game,
we never sell data or show ads, and you can have everything deleted
by asking.
What we collect, and why
- Account details — your email address and a password
(stored only as a salted hash), or, if you sign in with Google or Apple,
the email address and name their sign-in service shares with us. Used to
create and secure your account. Signing in with Google or Apple gives us
no access to your contacts, files, or anything else in those accounts.
- Display name and avatar choice — optional. If you set
a display name, it (with your points and streak) becomes visible to other
players in the regional Community list. Leave it empty and you are
invisible there.
- Location — one point, captured when you set up your
region (from your device's GPS with your permission, at the precision your
operating system provides). It is used to work out which species live
around you and is stored with your account. The app does not track your
location in the background or record movement.
- Device timezone — so your daily quiz and reminder
arrive at your local time.
- Gameplay activity — your quiz answers, scores,
streaks and species progress. This is the game itself.
- Push notification token — a device identifier issued
by Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging, used solely to deliver your daily
reminder. Stored until you sign out or the token is replaced.
- Crash and diagnostic data — if the app crashes, a
report (stack trace, device model, OS version, app version) goes to
Sentry, our error-tracking service, so we can fix bugs. These reports are
not used for advertising or profiling.
- Server logs — like nearly every online service, our
servers keep short-lived technical logs (IP address, request path,
timing) for security and debugging.
What we never do
- No advertising, and no advertising or tracking SDKs in the app.
- No selling, renting, or sharing of your data with data brokers —
ever.
- No background location tracking.
- No profiling or automated decision-making about you.
Who processes data on our behalf
Your data lives on infrastructure operated by these processors, under
their standard data-processing terms:
- Amazon Web Services (Ireland, eu-west-1) — hosting,
database, and photo storage.
- Google Firebase Cloud Messaging — push notification
delivery.
- Google Sign-In / Sign in with Apple — optional
authentication, only if you choose them.
- Sentry — crash reporting.
Species photographs and species data shown in the app come from
iNaturalist and
Wikimedia Commons under
Creative Commons licenses — that content flows to you, and none of
your data flows to those projects.
Delete your Do Your Birds account and data
To request deletion of your Do Your Birds account and all data
associated with it, email
dev@dscvrlabs.com
from the email address on your account, with the subject
"Delete my Do Your Birds account". We will delete the account and all
associated data — profile, location, gameplay history, and push
token — within 30 days and confirm by reply. Routine database backups
expire automatically within a further 30 days. This works whether you
signed up with email and password, Google, or Apple.
Otherwise, we keep your data only for as long as your account
exists.
Children
Do Your Birds is a general-audience app and is not directed at children
under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13;
if you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will
delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, we will update this page and the
effective date above. Questions about any of it:
